Attitude

You might know the dictionary meaning of this word, or might give a speech on the topic. But when it comes to me I have my own version of its meaning.

The story starts when I was in school and Indian Railways was not computerised. Manual reservations were done and persons used to manully announce the arrival and departure of trains.

He was an ordinary counter clerk in Enquiry counter in Gonda Railway Station, announcing the arrival and departure of trains. This railway station is too small in the NE railways, and even smaller is the city. Nothing famous about it, and nothing worth anything. But frequent travellers knew this person by his voice. He was known across the NE railways as the best Enquiry operator and had won awards for best announcer for many years consequetively. His approach towards job was the same as Amir Khan says "No job is small" and he excelled in all.

For additional activity, he used to run an orchestra at a minimal rate. He has a gang of all railway employees , his friends who used to perform at marraiges and birthday parties. He could play almost all the musical instruments I have ever known and was a great singer.

What I liked about him is not his excellence but the realization that whoso ever meet him once will love him.He was the most positive attitude person I ever met. You cant stop being happy and laughing in this company. He has practically no enemies . Holding a public dealing job, he had exellent network, think about any institution /college/hospital/goverment bodies/ contractors/ thiefs/ smmuglers/police, everyone know him and he is respected everywhere. He was well known to near by villages also.

His marraige was another interesting chapter. He was staying with his parents in the railway quaters, when he heard a young girl of 17 years begging for food at his door steps. He was buzy with his musical instruments, when he overheard the conversation of his mother and the girl. The girl was from a  near by town born to a very poor family. She never had 2 meals in her whole life. Her parents died at an early age and now her brother is finding difficult to feed one more mouth so was ready to sell her off to an old man of 60 years. She ran away from there, and hadnt eaten anything from last 6 days and thus forced to beg.

His mother refused to give alms but offered shelter if she promised to do household work. The girl agreed. Days passed and she became a part of the family. She had never gone to school but her attitude was amazing. Both of them became close and he asked her for her hand. His mother was reluctant at first but when the girl agreed, the marraige happened.

He forced her wife to study and complete her formal education till graduation. His family supported both of them always.

Along with other things his memory was something I bow my head to .. He will listen your voice once and will recognise you by name even you meet him after months. He even recognize the foot steps at once. It was impossible to cheat him or keep him in dark, even though God has given him only darkness.

He lost his eye sight at the age of 8 when he was trying to help his mother in cutting the woods. A small piece flew and it entered his eyes. Not knowing , he rubbed it to end his eye sight for ever, and the infection was such that his life was cut short to only 30 years.

I recall seeing the movie Anand, but this man is a real life Anand. He is someone who can not be forgotten.

I dont know how many years have gone since he took his last breath may be 15-18 years, but today also when I cross the enquiry counter I picture him recognizing my foot steps. I recall people turning up to ask my mom about his whereabouts after 3-5 years. I realise that no one in my moms office have forgotten him. He is still cherished and brings smile as his name is mentioned.

I wonder who was he. A blind person who came over his disability as the finest employee of railways for years, or a husband who married a girl informing her she will be widow in next 10 years and forcing her to do her studies so that she can have his job and sustain a good life after his death. A friend who found hidden talents in his friends and surface them, made them follow their passion. or a stranger whose smiles had given relief to many passengers unaware that the eyes probing them cant see them. He changed the lives of all who were near him for good.

With no regrets on his death bed , he asked for forgiveness as he found himself the reason for making hundreds of people stand in the hospital with damp eyes.

His life was ruthless but he turned every moment into an opportunity. I remember his words to a travellor from Mumbai when he felt sorry after knowing he was blind.

"I cannot change what has already happened or about to happen but its always in my hand how I feel about it. Thanks to the Almighty for giving me the sight to see it."

He smiled and helped the customer with the details he needed. The person was one who carried his dead body from the hospital to the ghat.

This is what I call an  Attitude.

Who were they,,,

I love travelling,,, Religious places is my favourite,, specially The Holy Shrine of Vaishno Devi. I have been going there since I was a child.. I met some people in the last visit whom I dont know but cant forget. These words are  a way to salute them...

We (me and my husband) started our journey from Katra by evening , there was a little bit of drizzling. We took raincoats for safer side. When we crossed Ardhkumari after having dinner, it was a storm like condition but we could not stop.. we were wet and the temperature has dropped significantly below 4 deg C. Somehow we reached Darbar and had a great darshan. Then by midnight we had great darshan of Bhaironath too.. the real jouney began after that. As soon as we left Bhaironath we could not see anyone else on the way. We continued as there were street lights. Suddenly a light struck just a few meters away from us. and we could not see anything else. We were wet, bare footed, it was dark with no light and nothing in the sky.. suddenly we felt something on our face... and fear struck us.. it was snowfall.. The road from Bhaironath is normally slippery which was worsened by snowfall ..

For the first time in my life I realized what silence is.. what is darkness and how you can feel being bare footed in the snowfall. I seen that many times in TV,, but felt swet running through my hand at a temp below 0 degC. We started crawling and suddenly we heard some voice,,, for the first time I felt what exactly it means to be in a group. There were few people at the next shed flashing torch light.. We reached and took breath...We all stayed there till few more arrived and then we started our journey back home. It was dark and aftersome time we were something about 15-20 persons.. walking in a line as it was too dark and there were only 2 torches one in the front and one in the back. The first person would call.. Here comes the stair and its repeated everytime so caution the one coming at the back... This is my most memorable jouney.. an old man who can barely walk was asking everyone to keep walking,, a kid of 3 years walking with snow filled slippery road chearing everyone... a lady who fall almost 25 times asking everyone to be carefull....We somehow managed to reach Sanjichat,, the place was full of snow and a few of them who have never seen snow (actually they were not seeing it now also they were feeling it) started playing in it...we started from there after some elderly person scolded a gang of strangers playing in snow that we all can get frost bite and worse die in snow...Another lightening struck and left all of us blinded for another few seconds. "Jai Mata Di" everyone spoke in unison as a reply to the lightening and with new energy started off to Ardhkumari.. The journey was even horrible then,,,  snowfall has stopped and heavy rainfall started.. making it impossible to walk. We all were crawling and trying to be on our feet ....

When we reached we were drenched in rain water, there was snow flakes in our hair, we can not fold our fingers and we could not feel anything in our feet.... Any how reached Ardhkumari , finally we saw some light,, generators were working in Ardhkumari. Our group split immediately.. We dont know who the other persons were,, and possibly we will never know

On our return to home,, I sat at home and thought what was that,, what relation we had,,, no thanks ,, no formalities,,,no contacts, There was no facebook, no emails, I attended many team building sessions,, but this one was the best,,, A group where everyone played their part best without a mentor or a leader. No one ever thought of it before. but it did happened..

I am writing these words to the spirit that hold everyone of us together that day,...  Lets that same spirit be there in heart of everyone all the time..

I still wonder..Who were they????
A Salute to the True Human Spirit I witnessed not with my eyes,,, but with my heart......

"Jai Mata Di"

The ever smiling Doctor

On my trip to Kailash with Isha, I met many people. Many meditators, many ishanganas, many software , business owners , professional trekkers, bikers,  nutritionist, home makers, with a baseline..everyone wants to go to Kailash.

When I signed up for this trip I knew nothing about Isha and knew no one whose in the sojourn as is the name of the program. I had definetly heard about Sadhguru, and view some of his you tube shorts. Anyways thats a different story

This write is about the person I met in the first medical screening at Radisson hotel Kathmandu. A short haired, smiling lady, an attractive personality who instantly had my attention, one of the fews I was drawn to in first sight. If I would be a man, I would say Love at first sight. Her smile can light up anyones day.

She volunteered as a doctor, later I came to know she is in to Neuro...Beauty, with brain is a common thing now . Here is an addon charismatic personality.

For the evening medical screening I got a little late, i went out and while returning the indrive app was not picking my location. I have to ask help from a local to book a cab..
When I reached back she was taking her dinner, even though I apologized, she smiled and was about to postpone her dinner.. this was not charity, or volunteering or a doctors duty.. I strongly believe it was just her..

Sometimes in our lives we get so busy that we forget who we really are and become someone else. Its so rare to find people like her whose presence brings calmness around them.

It a blessing to meet you Dr Chandana... I really wish never to meet you in Doctor's cape post this trip :)
